Botox
What is Botox?
Botox is a purified protein that can temporarily decrease muscle contraction resulting in decreased facial lines. By alleviating the creasing of the skin, Botox can prevent wrinkles from ever forming! Botox is best at treating dynamic facial lines caused by facial muscle activity such as:
- Scowl lines between the brows
- Forehead Wrinkles
- Crow’s feet
- Lip Lines
What else can Botox be used for?
- Brow Lift: The downward pull of facial muscles can make the lateral eyebrows start to fall. This can be alleviated with just a few well-placed injections of Botox.
- Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis): Botox can effectively shut down sweat production under the arms, on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. These effects can last up to six months.
- Gummy Smile: Some patients are concerned that they have a “gummy smile” when the upper gums are significantly visible above the teeth. This can easily be corrected with Botox.
- Bunny Lines: Lines and folds on the lateral sides of the nose can be treated and prevented with a tiny amount of Botox on either side of the nose.
- Neck Bands: If you have significant vertical bands on the front of your neck, the muscles creating these bands can be relaxed with Botox.
Is it safe?
YES! We have been using Botox safely in patients with Cerebral Palsy and many other muscle contraction disorders for almost twenty years. The amounts used for cosmetic purposes are often up to 20 times less than amounts used for pathological muscle contractions.
When should I start having Botox treatments?
This depends on genetics and how well you protect your skin from environmental damage. You can start Botox at just about any age but most patients start in their late 20’s to early 30’s. The key is to start treatment before lines show up at rest. Even if you already have lines at rest, Botox will help smooth those lines out and will keep them from getting deeper.
How many units do I need?
This depends on several things:
- How many areas an individual would like treated
- Each area usually requires between 15-30 units for women and 30-40 units in men
- Muscle mass in that area and amount of desired correction
- Most patients fall between 30-70 units
- Also note: Botox can be mixed differently from office to office. We use a concentrated solution of 50 units/mL (this allows more precise placement of the protein and less swelling)
How much will it cost?
We are proud of our price and happy to publish it:
$13 per unit for physician administered Botox and $11 on Wednesdays
What should I do before I come in?
Please try to avoid products including Omega Fatty Acids (Fish Oil), Vitamin E, Flax Seed, NSAIDS (Aleve, Motrin, Advil), aspirin and red wine 7-10 days before and after your treatment. These products increase the likelihood and severity of bleeding and bruising.
What will happen during your appointment?
Dr. Verebelyi will discuss your expectations and what areas you are interested in having treated. He will spend as long as needed until you are comfortable before your treatment. Immediately before your procedure the treatment area will be cleaned with alcohol. A very fine needle (the same used by diabetics for their daily insulin treatments) will be used to administer the Botox. Dr. Verebelyi is very gentle and almost all patients report minimal, if any, pain. The total treatment time is only about 10 minutes.
