What does IPL do?
IPL removes dark spots on the skin and can be used to decrease both defuse redness and precancerous lesions. It can be used for: Age spots and sun damage, rosacea, Poikiloderma, Keratosis Pilaris, Melasma, Freckles, and Diffuse redness. IPL can also be used with Levulan for treatment of Actinic Keratosis (pre-cancerous sun damage).
What happens during the treatment?
IPL is used to destroy pigmented spots on the skin. Energy from the hand-piece is absorbed by the dark pigment in the skin breaking it apart. There is no downtime and patients may resume their normal activities that day. Treatment time is determined by the size of the area. A full face takes about 30 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
Most lesions will resolve in about 3 sessions. After the area is treated the lesion will actually become darker over the next few days until sloughing off about 10-14 days later.
What else do I need to know?
Care should be taken not to perform IPL over any lesion which may be melanoma as this may delay diagnosis of the disease. This is one reason why it is so important to have an MD, PA or RN perform your treatment. Patients should expect some mild redness which goes away in 2-3 days and some peeling over the next two weeks.

What are the other treatment options?
Yes, but we can not stop white immature hair from developing into darker mature hair over time. Because of this, some patients may want to return for 1-2 touch up sessions every few years.
