Procedures - Vein Removal

Vein Removal

Our state-of-the-art technology allows us to treat many different types of veins including spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins, often referred to as telangiectasias, are small visible vessels just beneath the skin. They are often found on the face and legs. Varicose veins are larger, distended veins beneath the skin. They may appear bumpy, blue in color and often cause discomfort or pain. Varicose veins don’t have a function any longer and the body does not miss them when they are removed. Because spider veins will return in the presence of varicose veins, we suggest treating varicose veins first.

In the past, veins were treated with Sclerotherapy. This procedure involved injecting a liquid agent through a small needle directly into the veins causing them to collapse and contract. The veins had to be medium to large in size in order for the needle to fit inside them. Spider veins are difficult to treat with sclerotherapy. The procedure was often painful, costly and time consuming with treatments lasting up to an hour. Afterward, a patient would need to wear compression garments for 3 to 10 days and avoid exercise, hot baths and alcohol for 2 to 3 days. With sclerotherapy, only a 50% improvement was anticipated with each treatment and you would expect to have 2 to 6 treatments spaced 1 to 2 months apart.

With our superior technology, laser vein treatment is faster, safer, more comfortable and less costly than sclerotherapy. As the laser is applied to the skin, the energy causes the veins to coagulate and shrink. The treatment feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin and most patients tolerate it well without anesthetic. Immediately following the treatment, the veins will be darker and more visible – this is normal. Over a period of 2 to 6 weeks, the veins will fade. You will see a 70%-80% improvement in facial veins and a 30-40% improvement in leg veins after each treatment. You will generally need an average of 3 treatments spaced at 3-month intervals to achieve the desired result. Because there is no need for injections, compression garments, or rest periods – normal activity can be resumed the same day as treatment.
