What to expect:
Treating veins is a process. Most patients will require anywhere from one to four treatments. You should expect some redness and bruising over the areas treated. Minor crusting or peeling may also occur. Bruising may last several weeks. The veins that are treated will take anywhere from a couple weeks up to a few months to resolve depending on the size and the vessels and the surrounding tissue. It is very improtant that you avoid tanning and tanning creams for at least two weeks before and after your treatments. Tanning of any type may increase your risk of hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) or hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin). Taking high doses of iron may also increase your risk for hyperpigmentation.
Post treatment instructions:
- You may return to your normal activities the same day but try to avoid strenous exercise and hot tubs for 48 hours.
- Do not rub, scratch or pick at the treated area. After bathing pat the treated areas dry instead of rubbing them.
- Sun exposure to the treated area may cause hyperpigmentation. You need to completely protect the area with a zinc based sunscreen (SPF of 30 or higher).
- Gentle massage over the treated area daily will encourage improved circulation and may improve the clearing of bruising and vascular debris.
- Bruising: may last a couple days to a couple weeks:
- Place cool packs over the area immediately after treatment.
- Arnica Montana can be very effective when used as a topical gel or an oral tablet. It is most effective when both forms are used together, take the tablets and apply gel 4-6 times a day.
- Bromelain (an enzyme found in pinnapple) also helps to minimize the bruising by helping to digest the proteins that trigger bruising and swelling. Take 250-500 mg four times a day until the bruise heals.
- Mild to moderate post procedure tenderness may be relieved with cool packs and Tylenol 500-1000mg every 6 hours.
- Follow up appointment should be arranged 6-10 weeks after your treatment.
- If you see any signs of infection (discharge, increasing redness or tenderness) or have any questions please call the office at 303-683-3235.
